Get ahead sooner with transfer credits

NLU’s online programs feature accelerated courses so you can advance your career and make a difference in your community faster. By transferring previously earned credits from one or more of the sources below, you may be able to finish your program even sooner.

Credit for prior college courses

Undergraduate students

  • Transfer as many credits as you want as long as they meet NLU standards
  • At least 60 credits need to be completed at NLU
    • 45 of those have to be in your actual degree program (not general ed or unrelated electives)

Graduate students

  • Earn at least a “B” grade for the course to be considered for transfer eligibility
  • Guidelines vary by program, and the number of credits that can be transferred is determined on an individual basis
Credit by examination (testing out of courses)

NLU accepts credit through the following:

  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
  • DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)
  • NYU Language Proficiency Exams
  • The Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) portfolio documentation
Credit for professional licenses and certificates

If you have a professional license or certificate in one or more of the fields below, it may qualify for transfer credit.

Undergraduate students

  • Food protection
  • Human resources
  • Loan originator
  • Project management professional (PMP)
  • Certified nursing assistant (CNA)
  • CPR and first aid
  • Personal trainer

Graduate students

  • Professional in Human Resources® (PHR®)
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources® (SPHR®)
Credit for service members, veterans and eligible spouses

While anyone can take CLEP or DSST tests for undergraduate credit, qualifying military personnel and their families can take them for free through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES).

Additionally, your military coursework and experiences could count as credits toward your degree. An NLU enrollment specialist can help you find out if you qualify for these benefits.

I was very nervous when I transferred from the community college to National Louis, but the school really does help you out. They really do care about you! That’s what got me through.
