Types of Aid

We recognize that continuing your education is a significant investment of your time and money, which is why NLU provides several options for financial aid. Explore potential financial aid options below, then connect with us to find out what you may qualify for.

Federal Aid

The financial aid process all starts with completing and submitting your Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This will determine which forms of aid you are eligible for, including:

  • Grants, such as the Pell Grant or the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG); or
  • Loans, such as federal subsidized and unsubsidized student loans offered through the U.S. Department of Education.

Quick Tip: What’s the fastest way to find out which aid programs you qualify for? Complete and submit your FAFSA immediately after October 1 of each year. The federal school code for NLU is 001733.

State Aid

The state of Illinois offers financial aid options to Illinois residents who have completed and submitted their Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If eligible, you can receive aid in the form of:

  • Minority Teachers of Illinois Scholarship: Awarded to eligible, academically talented minority students to pursue careers as teachers at nonprofit Illinois preschools, elementary and secondary schools.
  • Nursing Education Scholarship Program: This scholarship provides financial aid anywhere from one to four years. You must begin full- or part-time employment as a licensed practical or registered nurse in Illinois within six months of graduating.

Quick Tip: Don’t live in Illinois? Many states offer higher education scholarships to their residents. Ask an NLU enrollment specialist how you can find out what you’re eligible for in your home state.
